Licuala grandis
Plant species: Licuala grandis
Plant genus: Licuala
Plant family: Arecaceae
Origin: Santa Cruz, Vanuatu, Pacific.
Soil drainage: well-drained, we recommend a substrate mix composed of coco coir, perlite, vermiculite, pumice.
Soil pH: acidic
Fertilizers: Licuala grandis requires moderate fertilization, so we recommend using a bio fertilizer (we use the BioBizz brand for the plants we cultivate) from early March to late November.
Air humidity: it thrives best at 70% - 80% humidity, but it also performs admirably in an environment with lower humidity, down to 50%. We also recommend positioning the palm tree in a space with indirect light.
Temperature: 20-30 degrees Celsius
Light: full indirect sunlight.
Plant height including pot: 80-120cm
Pot diameter: 24cm
Licuala grandis is a palm species with a shorter stature, making it perfect for indoor settings. It is considered aesthetically perfect for enhancing the look of a room due to its architectural foliage. The palm tree also has the following characteristics:
Licuala encompasses a total of 150 known species, all native to warm and humid areas of Southeast Asia and Australia. In its natural habitat, Licuala can reach a height of 4 to 5 meters, but when kept as a houseplant, it is likely to reach only about 2 meters.
These tropical palms prefer temperatures between 25 and 30 °C. Ensure that the temperature does not drop below 20 °C, even in winter. Licuala palms are happiest at humidity levels between 70 and 80%. Therefore, a location receiving ample natural light is an ideal spot to place the plant. Alternatively, you can supplement humidity anytime with the help of a humidifier. Licuala palms require full, but indirect light, and younger plants can tolerate partial shade.
The best time for transplanting is spring or summer. However, due to their slow growth rate, this is necessary only every 2 to 4 years. Choose the pot size based on the height of the palm tree. For example, a 1.2 m tall plant would require a pot of approximately 25 cm in diameter. Choosing a deep pot is important as they are happiest when their roots have space to grow downwards.
It has a very good growth rate under optimal conditions, namely full indirect sunlight (east-facing windows are the best option), humidity of 60% - 70%, and watering the substrate when the top two centimeters have dried out.
Attention! To check the moisture level of the substrate, inserting a finger into the pot to a depth of 2 cm is the best way to measure soil moisture. Therefore, if you feel the substrate is moist, keep the spray bottle away from it for one or two days, and if it feels dry, water it.
Attention 2! When watering, we need to consider the pot in which the plant is planted, as well as the amount of substrate and its aeration level. That is, we do not pour a liter of water into a pot with a diameter and height of 12 cm, as we will drown the plant's roots. It is best to discard the excess water from the collector pot half an hour after watering.
Good luck with caring for it! And don't forget to give us updates about your plant, using the hashtag #greenmirrors and tagging @green.mirrors in your Instagram posts! We promise to share them in stories ☺
